Have You Seen Paul McCartney’s Lost Bass Guitar? Tips Welcome.
By Isabella Kwai
For decades, mystery has surrounded the fate of the missing bass that accompanied the Beatles as they rocketed to fame. A new campaign is trying to find it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Before Beatlemania, there was the distinctive Höfner violin bass — the first guitar that Paul McCartney bought after becoming the bassist for the Beatles.
That bass can be heard on some of the band’s most famous hits, including “Love Me Do,” “She Loves You,” and “Twist and Shout.”
Mr. McCartney picked up the instrument in a Hamburg music store in 1961, and it accompanied the Fab Four as they rocketed to stunning success, becoming the most famous band in the world. But the guitar vanished eight years later.
A new campaign is seeking to find the missing instrument, and hundreds of people have responded, hoping to help solve the decades-old mystery: Where is Paul McCartney’s missing bass guitar?
“It’s a hugely significant instrument in its own right,” said Nick Wass, a semiretired consultant for Höfner, the guitar’s manufacturer, who has joined forces with two journalists to try and track the guitar down. “It’s the bass that made the Beatles.”
“The bass was absolutely at the heart of the origins of the Beatles sound,” said one of the journalists, Scott Jones, who worked for the BBC. “The smallest pieces of information can often lead to the biggest breakthroughs,” he said of their appeal for tips on its fate.
Mr. Jones’s wife, Naomi, is the other journalist behind what they are calling The Lost Bass Project.
The three Beatles fans have urged members of the public to come forwardwith any information that might help. No tip is too small, they say, and they are promising to keep sources confidential. They say they have already received several credible leads since the project was launched on Saturday.
The instrument’s treasured place in Beatles mythology is intertwined with the band’s story. After the departure of their original bassist, Stuart Sutcliffe, Mr. McCartney, who had been playing guitar, switched instruments to replace him during a residency in Hamburg in 1961. For that, he needed a new bass guitar.
“I got my Violin Bass at the Steinway shop in the town center. I remember going along and there was this bass which was quite cheap,” he said in a 1993 interview with Guitar Magazine, adding that he had not wanted to go into debt and could only afford the Höfner, 500/1 guitar at the time. It cost about £30 pounds, or $38, he recalled. “And once I bought it, I fell in love with it.”
Mr. McCartney took the guitar back to Britain, where it accompanied the Beatles through hundreds of gigs — from the band’s early concerts at the Cavern Club in Liverpool, where they were spotted by Brian Epstein, who would become their manager, to the recording of their first two albums. It was repaired in 1964, according to the team behind the new search, and then used along with other bass guitars.
But the last confirmed sighting of the instrument was in London in 1969, in video footage of the band members writing their final album, “Let It Be.” Rumors have percolated ever since about what happened to the instrument: The Lost Bass Project suggests that it could have been stolen or lost either from the basement of Abbey Road Studios, or from the Apple Corps recording studio on Savile Row.
A representative for Paul McCartney declined a request for an interview. But Mr. Wass said he understood, from previous communications with Mr. McCartney, that he was keen to be reunited with the instrument. “He calls it the ancient one,” Mr. Wass said.
Among the leads they had received, Mr. Jones said, were suggestions that the instrument could have traveled to the United States or Japan. But he added that all the leads need to be vetted. “Somewhere among that information there is going to be the answer,” he said.
Other iconic instruments have been lost and found over the years — one close example being a Gibson acoustic guitar belonging to John Lennon, which was bought in 1962 and then lost the following year. Half a century later, it re-emerged and was sold at auction in 2015 to an anonymous buyer for $2.4 million.
It is unclear what the market value of Mr. McCartney’s missing guitar would be, but the team behind the search insists that the effort is not for monetary gain, calling the guitar “priceless.”
“We just want to know where it is,” said Mr. Wass.

Sydney to Nice via Dubai
It was great to catch up with some of my fellow travellers at Sydney Airport including those who had been on other Gulliver’s RWC tours with me.
I enjoyed snacks and drinks with Vicki and Paul before boarding the flight.
I had paid to select my seat and as I particularly wanted an aisle seat in a centre four , I ended up in the very back row. However I really lucked out as there were only two of us in the fours seats. According to the crew they were 2 of the only three empty seats on the plane. The back was also exceptionally quiet with very few people coming down to use the amenities.
I was able to watch part of the Australia v India Cricket before the Japan v Argentina then the crucial Portugal v Fiji Rugby. Wow the Portuguese were tremendous and thoroughly deserved their win - a shame it couldn’t have been by a bit more !
The food was excellent and the flight smooth but unfortunately as usual I did not get any sleep.
The stop at Dubai was just over 3 hours which allowed time to not only navigate to our next departure lounge ( a 30 minute walk) but also to catch up with others in the group and enjoy a coffee ( > $12 each!)
The Dubai to Nice flight was only about 25%full so I had 4 seats to myself. It was quite funny during the flight to see many  had changed seats and there were sleepers spread out everywhere. It reminded me of a flight Stuart, my mother and I took from Honolulu to Sydney many years ago  when the flight crew said to us during the meal service “ you don’t need to sit together there are so many spare seats”
Breakfast was not as good as the previous leg nor lunch, which is not a criticism but more a compliment to the Sydney facilities.
We arrived at the hotel around 3 pm and most of us tried to keep awake. i went for a short walk around the area.
Welcome drinks and canapes was a good way to start the tour as it gave us the opportunity to meet the 'strangers" in our group. Quite an interesting mix. Joyce and I were pleased to catch up with Damien Frawley , a formed Qld Red and Wallaby who had had a couple of seasons playing at SydneyUni .
We have mixed thoughts on which teams we are going to support now. i think for the games we are attending this weekend Fiji for most of us but sunday is divided betwen Wales and Argentina.

Yes, I think it was all part of a fascination with Western culture influenced seeing crosses in fashion and religious themes in Anime and Japanese music. I'll let you know if I do find anything! XD yes vampires and churches do seem to go hand-in-hand and I can think of one Anime I watched that specifically involves the Catholic church and vampires, Trinity Blood and it looks like that was 2006 but other than that I haven't watched too many Vampire Anime.
Yeah, sometimes I wonder if some of it could have been adlibing on Eric Stuart's part. Considering he portrayed Brock and James in Pokemon I'm sure he got used to cracking jokes in-character but I wouldn't know for sure, perhaps it's a mixture of both jokes 4kids wrote and his own adlibing Yes, karaoke was so much fun and I miss it every day lol
Yes, I agree that even though the later seasons aren't weak at all that Battle City was just right in terms of how it was written. Seeing how it's such a large part of the manga it makes sense. I do agree that Dartz wasn't that compelling a villain but certain aspects of the Doma arc were really interesting. By late Battle City it seemed like Atem had shed the darker half of his personality to the point where he was almost willing to give up dueling for the safety of his friends. So, it's interesting to see that when pushed to the edge he very much still had that darker side to him. As for the dynamic with Mai, Valon, and Jou, I found that pretty compelling as well. I know she was still recovering from the damage Malik caused her mentally and was in the perfect state of vulnerability to be manipulated. I do feel like Valon was actually falling for her too though which made it very interesting lol.
Yes, same here! I was so happy to see them celebrating the original Yugioh and to actually see merch with the original characters on it in Japan! Especially after seeing ads in stores for the spin-off. Yeah, to me Ash, despite having his own personality, is kinda like a self-insert for the viewer, I mean he's generic enough that it could work but he also has enough personality that if you don't want to insert yourself it could also work? I know in Japanese he was named after the creator Satoshi, but yeah he is kinda boring. I don't blame you for being more interested in Dawn and Paul.
Certainly we are on the older end of the demographic so that probably affects what interests we had when the show was newly airing. I'd been interested in Egyptian mythology really since 2nd or 3rd grade. I liked all kinds of mythology but I felt like Greek and Roman mythology were being covered to death at that time and got kinda bored to them (to this day I'm trying to push myself to get back to reading them lol) and Egyptian mythology was just so unique. I also found their history and culture fascinating. So yeah, Yugioh relating to it really helped keep me invested.
Yeah, based on what I know about you I understand you preferring Seto Kaiba and the antagonists. I initially focused on Yuugi and his group of friends but I did come to really like Seto Kaiba once I started reading the manga and saw some of the Japanese version, that and having an OC that's a huge fan of him kinda made me pay more attention than I had previously lol. During Battle City I really liked Malik and felt invested in his backstory. I wasn't a fan of Yami Malik though so once he took over full-time I stopped caring as much.
Yes, I absolutely loved how he stylized the characters' decks based on their personalities! That was one of my favorite aspects of his writing. I wanted to do the same with my OCs but since I'm not great at coming up with Dueling strategies it was a bit of a struggle for me tbh.
youtube
As the title says this is a mixed dub. Atem is in English and Seto Japanese. So hope you don’t mind. But I do just love the duels in the movie…!
Sugirandom: Ahh, yes I thought when this started that he was using a simulation, dueling in a church does seem dramatic lol. I guess having it be dubbed subbed mix actually made it easier for me to pick up on it being the simulation too because of the disconnect. I don't mind too much, the duel is always epic and it's nice to hear the dub alongside the OG soundtrack instead of 4Kids' music. I really like
Atem's japanese voice though so I'd like to see the whole movie in Japanese one day. I feel like in Japanese Yuugi and Atem sounded more like the same person, he had the deeper voice and different vibe but the voices weren't so different that it felt like the voice was from two seperate bodies.. IDK if that makes sense, I guess it felt like it was easier to imagine that Yuugi was 'possessed' by Atem's spirit in the Japanese version to me.
IDK why I went on that tangent sorry, the CGI in the movie is nice too, it's blended it in nicely and not distracting like some Anime CGI can be! Thanks again for sharing!

What are your book recommendations? I read the Shiver and Lament series by Maggie Stiefvater like 10 years ago so we might have similar tastes :D
Hi Oliver!! Hope you're well.
Firstly, if you enjoy YA, you might like my podcast, which is my librarian friend and I telling one another about YA books we've read.
Secondly, I keep a spreadsheet of books I've read because that's the kind of person I am. Based on Stiefvater, you might enjoyyyy:
Out of Salem – Hal Schrieve(2019)
It's queer zombies and werewolves doing solidarity and facing a rising wave of fascism in their small town.
My note on it was "big feelings about this one. May not be coherent about it for a little while yet. Everything in the world was in it. 8/10 i think." Hal Schrieve MADE A COMIC ABOUT THE COMMENTS I MADE ABOUT IT. so that was a gorgeous. It's really queer. not just has queer characters, but is deeply and fundamentally queer.
Podcast episode here
Paul Takes the Form of a Mortal Girl – Andrea Lawlor (2017)
"this book reminded me why I love reading. Why I love being queer. 10/10. The character is unlikeable sometimes but I still always love him. The slight surrealness is so real though. This is amazing."
Cry of the Icemark - Stuart Hill (2005)
"Love. Reread. Lord I don't care about military snow leopards tho. Skip that and it's perfect. LOVE the grotesque healing cave 9/10"
and a grab bag of books not very like maggie stiefvater but which I adored recently:
Apricots at midnight – Adéle Geras (1977)
"10/10 i love it still. Perfect bedtime stories."
Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil – John Berendt (1994)
"I prefer the first half of the book to the second, it loses some of of its charm and colour in the trial details. Also noteworthy that the two points where the author inserts himself most into the narrative is when he is disapproving of the actions of black women. Yikes John. I still love this book. 9/10"
Never Bite A Boy On The First Date - Tamara Summers (2009)
"10/10 a beachy summery vampire romance murder mystery read. Funny and silly and wonderful. Read it in a day."
Reaper Man – Terry Pratchett (1991)
"god i read it in a day. I didn’t realise how early in the run it is. There’s some oddness in that. I love that the moral seems to be that the undead (queer coded and like, reject coded. Punk coded.) is the city’s natural adaption to resist gentrification (mall culture). 9/10 "there's no justice, there's just us.""
House of Leaves – Mark z. Danielewski. (2000)
"I don’t even know what to say. 10/10."
Kitchen – Banana Yoshimoto (1993 – english translation)
"9/10 i adored it. One novella in two parts, and one short story/novella. So, 3 parts total. About death and being young in japan. I love the way of writing. A real attention paid to moments. Jamie and I think the author is trans."
Amongst Women – John McGahern (1990)
9/10 i read it all in two days. True. Rough. Teaching a language to me that i don’t know that well. It deflated a bit at the end, as lives do i suppose.
And I'll stop myself now!!!

Hondo Guitar Serial Number Lookup
Hondo was an American guitar company and brand owned by IMC, and later Musicorp, that produced a range of entry level to high-end acoustic guitars, electric guitars and basses with designs primarily based on those of classic models such as the Fender Stratocaster and the Gibson Les Paul. From 1972 to 1989 the guitars were mainly produced in Korea by Samick, with the short-lived Professional Series being made in Japan. In 2005, the J.B. Player brand replaced the Hondo name.

Hondo was an American guitar company and brand owned by IMC, and later Musicorp, that produced a range of entry level to high-end acoustic guitars, electric guitars and basses with designs primarily based on those of classic models such as the Fender Stratocaster and the Gibson Les Paul. From 1972 to 1989 the guitars were mainly produced in Korea by Samick, with the short-lived Professional.
The Hondo guitar company was originally formed in 1969 when Jerry Freed and Tommy Moore of the International Music Corporation (IMC) of Fort Worth, Texas, formed a joint-venture with Korean manufacturer Samick Company. IMC's intent was to introduce modern manufacturing techniques and American/Japanese quality standards to the Korean guitar manufacturing industry. The Hondo concept was to offer an organized product line and solid entry-level market instruments at a fair market price.

By 1975, Hondo had distributors in 70 countries worldwide, and had expanded to producing stringed instruments at the time. In 1976, over 22,000 of the Bi-Centennialbanjos were sold. The company also made improvements to the finish quality on their products, introduced scalloped bracing on acoustics, and began using a higher quality brand of tuning machines.
Hondo was one of the first overseas guitar builders to feature American-built DiMarzio pickups on the import instruments beginning in 1978. By this year, a number of Hondo II models featured designs based on classic American favorites. In 1979, over 790,000 Hondo instruments were sold worldwide. In 1980, the Professional Series was introduced, featuring higher-end Japanese-made models, produced by Tokai and Matsumoku (Only the Professional Series models were made in Japan, all other Hondos were made in Korea). These models were sold until 1983, alongside the Korean lineup (which became the Deluxe Series in 1981). At that point, the product line consisted of 485 different models.
In 1985, IMC acquired major interest in the Charvel/Jackson Company, and began dedicating more time and interest in the higher end guitar market. The Hondo trademark went into mothballs around 1989. However, Jerry Freed started the Jerry Freed International Company in 1989, and acquired the rights to the Hondo trademark in 1991. Freed began distribution of a new line of Hondo guitars produced in India, China and Taiwan. In 1993, the revamped company was relocated to Stuart, Florida.
The Hondo Guitar Company was purchased by the MBT International (now Musicorp) in 1995.(1) The Hondo product line was revamped for improved quality while maintaining student-friendly prices. Hondo celebrated their 25th year of manufacturing electric guitars in 1997. Musicorp also owns and distributes J.B. Player instruments which replaced Hondo in 2005.

As an author, she collaborated on the 2014 book Study of Pose. She is also the founder of the Coco Rocha Model Camp and co-owner of the Nomad Management Modeling Agency.

In 2002, agent Charles Stuart approached Coco at an Irish dance competition and asked her if she would consider modeling for him. At that point, she had never thought of modeling before. When she did begin to model, her knowledge of fashion was limited. Initially Coco spent time modeling in Asia, where she would shoot up to 75 looks a day for two months. She returned to New York and signed an exclusive contract with photographer Steven Meisel, who created a list of clients she could and could not work with. Of the time,She as stated that, "the industry started to hear about this list, so when I finally got to Paris, big designers were trying to get their name on the list. It was, now looking back, one of the craziest times in my career."She became known as one of the first models to harness social media, and earned the nickname the “Queen of Pose”. Meisel shot an editorial of Coco with Gemma Ward and Amanda Moore, which appeared on the cover of the April 2006 issue of Vogue Italia.

She also helped launch the agency’s first office outside of the US, located in Vietnam, in addition to opening a Los Angeles booking agency.

In July 2018 Rocha opened the Coco Rocha Model Camp in a renovated 8,000 square foot property that can house about a dozen model students at a time. The program is attended in four-day sessions, instructing students on the modeling industry, and Coco has also taught the program at Harvard University.

Note
hey dude for the music challenge u should do ALL OF EM
heh heh heh... such was my plan ALL ALONG. i will now use this ask as the place to do it (here’s the post btw)
1. A song that reminds you of your childhood: anything from Fiddler On The Roof (the original Broadway cast recording)... my dad loves Fiddler On The Roof and he used to play it all the time
2. A song to sleep to: heh, anything at 2am. but really New York And Back by Leanne & Naara
3. A song that your best friend loves: oh god, really? cmon i cant just know that...! ummmm mazie and i had a really in depth running conversation about her favorite music about two years ago but im forgetting it all. im PRETTY SURE Venus Ambassador by Bryan Scary & the Shredding Tears was the inspiration for her OC Stuart who we both love and occasionally develop
4. A song that hypes you the fuck up: HEH ANYTHING....! oh my god this is a haaaaard one because of how many options i have!!! but also: Awaken by Riot Games feat. Valerie Broussard, because WHEN THE DEVIL IS KNOCKINGGGGGGGGG... SO ALL YOU RESTLESS
5. A song you like to daydream to: i can only say “heh anything” so many times!! literally i daydream to basically every single song; its foundational to how i consume music. i’ll bring out the real heavy hitter now and say Follow You Down by Zedd feat. Bright Lights. ive got some REAL good daydreams for that one
6. A song that’s on at least 3 of your playlists: *breath in* no just kidding, i do my best to make sure my playlists arent too similar. the day you stop me from putting I Wanna Get Better by Bleachers on every character playlist is the day i die tho
7. A song that you love from a genre you don’t usually like: this should be easy; lemme just flip through my catalog of “songs i bought independent of their albums because i was building an 8tracks playlist in iTunes”... actually no, Planetary (GO!) by My Chemical Romance! i dont usually like whatever subgenre of rock MCR is all that much but this one GOES (fittingly shjfdis)
8. A song that you liked when you where 10 that still slaps: Der Kommissar by Falco. no fucking hesitation. i can thank my fluent-in-german mom for this one
9. A song that makes you want to go on an adventure: Zero by Imagine Dragons! ive daydreamed some poppin’ space adventures to that one
10. A song you’d want to dance with your partner to ( or future partner ): so, so much... NOT Jenny by Studio Killers because i just wanna make out to that one; maybe I Go Crazy by Paul Davis
11. A song to stomp around and pout to: difficult, because when i pout, i pout like grimbark jade, in that i go “actually im better than everyone and you can all smd.” then again, having made that clear, Roman Holiday by Nikki Minaj (shoutout: @floralmarsupial for killing me with that lyricstuck)
12. A song to listen to whilst you lie in a meadow: Folding Chair by Regina Spektor. TOO EASY
13. A song that reflects your views on love: uhhhhh. huh. polyam moments? no songs about polyamory moments? being polyamorous fundamentally affects my views on love in a way im not sure ive ever heard a song capture moments? Hot Air Balloon by Owl City because i’ll be out of my mind, and you’ll be out of ideas pretty soon, so let’s spend the afternoon in a cold hot air balloon
14. A song to sing to the sun: i feel like its probably not the intended spirit of this question, but Coming Over (feat. James Hersey) by Dillon Francis & Kygo. im usually more of a nighttime girl but honestly? call me xoxo
15. A song you like that sounds like its on the soundtrack to an indie coming of age film: ohhhh my gooooddddd literally any fucking Bastille song. any of them. thats like their whole angle and i LIVE for it. im picking Snakes because snakes are biting at my heels, the worries that refuse to let us go; ive been kicking them away and hoping not to let them take control
16. A song that you like that romanticises being a teenager: i would love to say Teen Idle by MARINA for the irony but i cant bring myself to. (ill still link it tho.) real answer is Centuries by Fall Out Boy, because whether or not it actually romanticises being a teen i just feel it yknow
17. A song that makes you want to grab your friends jump up and down dancing and screaming the lyrics: why did they write a question to which the only answer is Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen? i dont get it. just kidding another acceptable answer is Toxic by Britney Spears (my white is showing im sure)
18. A song that you like that the lyrics are just so beautiful they’re practically poetry: well actually i have such good taste that every song i listen to is poetry. (trying to remember the lyrics i cried to out of nowhere yesterday. oh right it was The Draw by Bastille but most of it doesnt fit the question as much) ANY Hozier song. im linking his fucking artist page because im NOT KIDDING. ANY HOZIER SONG. i toyed with picking a specific song as an “also, it’s this one haha” but no, im dead serious. i cant pick just one
19. A song that you can imagine listening to in an abandoned church ( if it isn’t hozier im judging you, but whatever ): ironic! to pick a specific Hozier song this time (because op is right, he’s the only choice), Talk
20. A song from the soundtrack of a film that you like so much after the film finished you immediately looked for it: hm, i feel like i have done this before, but i cant recall when... well i didnt go “oh fuck bop [blacks out]” but Immigrant Song by Led Zeppelin. remember Thor: Ragnarok? that was a good movie
21. A song for when the sun has gone down and you are feeling absolutely buck-wild with exhilaration!: Lost In Japan (Remix) by Shawn Mendes & Zedd, because no song hits my city-hotel aesthetic quite like this one does
22. A song that makes you feel like you’re strolling through Ancient Greece living your best life: ancient Greece...! that throws a fun twist in it; Don’t Leave Me (Ne me quitte pas) by Regina Spektor
23. A song that when you listen to it you’re transported to a liminal space, time is pointless and you must sit and wallow in the void that remains: Shots (Broiler Remix) by Imagine Dragons feat. Broiler. i glanced at this question early on and have been sitting on it the whole time. just LISTEN to it
23. A song to listen to on a long drive when you have the really strong urge to keep driving until you find somewhere to start a new life (preferably a europian city whose language you don’t speak): Evelyn by Kim Tillman & Silent Films. it just called to me here
im a little sad that i couldnt put every song ive ever listened to in here so heres some more good ones that i didnt choose: Citrine by Hayley Kiyoko (this is actually a whole EP), Lone Digger by Caravan Palace, Safe And Sound by Capital Cities, Absentee by Jack Campbell, River Flows In You by Yiruma, Instant Crush by Daft Punk, Link by Jim Yosef, Poke Bowl by Radiant Children, Optimistic by cehryl, Quiet by Lights, Superposition by Young the Giant, Far Too Young To Die by Panic! at the Disco, The Good, the Bad and the Dirty also by P!atD, Whatever It Takes by Hollywood Undead, LUNARIA (instrumental) by Chouchou. i know thats easily enough to make your eyes glaze over but mutuals especially it would mean a lot to me if you listened to at least a few of the songs i linked in this post because music means a lot to me and sharing it with other people is one of my favorite things :]
